First Anniversary Trip - Branson, Missouri

We went to Branson, Missouri this year, right after our first anniversary. Here is what happened!

Monday July 13th

-Drove to a campsite in Iowa. We ate lunch at a Wendy’s along the way and ate dinner at Cici’s Pizza in Des Moines. We also did some grocery shopping in Des Moines.
-We camped at Nine Eagles State Park in Southern Iowa. We got there kind of late and had to go out for some fire wood. The gas station didn’t have any and the lady there didn’t know where we could get some. There was an Amish guy eating a chili dog who told us about his friend who had a lumber mill. We decided to drive a quarter mile to the hy vee with a garden center. We got there right before they closed and had to convince them to let us buy fire wood. (The next morning Tom informed the gas station attendant, who was there again, that Hy Vee sells fire wood and she said she thought they might, but wasn’t sure, so she didn’t want to say anything – grr.)
-When we got back to the campsite, it was dark. It was hard for Tom start the fire, especially with the raccoon that wouldn’t leave us alone. Erin had to steal the lantern to scare him off. We ate in the car to stay away from the raccoon. Yes, we are wimps.

Tuesday July 14th
-Woke up to a Thunderstorm. Made it very messy to clean up the campsite and impossible to start a camp fire. We looked at the radar and figured out that we were in basically the only part of Iowa that was affected by the storm. We had some fast food, since we couldn’t make breakfast at the camp site.
-We drove the rest of the way to Branson. We arrived at Red Bud Cove B&B (which is really in Hollister, MO) and Erin was surprised to find red roses in our room! Tom had arranged for them to be waiting – so romantic!
-We ate dinner at Devil’s Pool restaurant, which was part of the resort near our B&B.

Wednesday July 15th

-We had our first breakfast at the B&B. The food was great and we had a great time each day talking to other couples that were staying there. We got recommendations for the shows in town that they really enjoyed.
-We went to Branson Landing, and outdoor shopping mall area. We ate some Gyro’s, bought some show tickets for a discount (without a timeshare pitch, because we were apparently too young – yay!) and enjoyed the fire and water show down by the boardwalk.
-Saw the show “Broadway” – a show with a variety of big Broadway numbers. Good show, but it would have been better if the background singers had not been lip syncing.
-Went to Mount Pleasant Winery for a Wine tasting.
-Visited Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum.
-Ate dinner and enjoyed the entertainment at Ernie Bigg’s Dueling Piano bar on Branson Landing. It was an all request dueling piano show. Really, none of the 3 pianists knew any Ben Folds or Ben Folds Five? Oh well, Journey will have to do…

Thursday July 16th

-Breakfast at B&B
-Did some planning and ticket buying online.
-Ate lunch at Fall Creek Steak and Catfish House – home of the tossed rolls. They literally toss the rolls across the restaurant at you. The food was great and we bought a great souvenir photo here. They took pictures of you everywhere and charged a ton for them. This was the most reasonable price - $12 for the picture and a nice glass frame (not a cardboard folder).
-“Six” – a show of six brothers who sing a capella. They not only sing, but simulate an entire band. This was one of our favorite shows!
-Ate at Andy’s Frozen Custard.
-Visited the World’s Largest Toy Museum. There must not be much competition – it wasn’t that big, but every corner was FULL of toys. It was fun and made us nostalgic!
-Went on the Showboat Branson Belle. It was dinner, a cruise and a show. This was one of our other favorite shows of the trip! There was singing, dancing, and a dog ventriloquist (real dogs with movable mouths attached to their chins). We bought a smoothie in a souvenir mug after dinner. We found out that the same company owns Silver Dollar City (which we were planning to go to on Friday), so we could get cheap refills of the mug there, too!
-As we were leaving the Branson Belle we realized that the headlights on Erin’s car were out. Tom tried the fuses, but that wasn’t the problem. They both apparently burned out at the same time. We had to drive back to the B&B with our brights (and hazards) on. Luckily we were on back roads without many cars, so hopefully we didn’t annoy too many people.

Friday July 17th
-Since we know how difficult it can be to replace the headlights on Erin’s car, we had to look up the nearest Hyundai dealer, which was in Springfield, MO (about a 30 minute drive).
-After breakfast at the B&B, we drove up to Springfield. While we waited for our appointment, we went to the Battlefield Mall and walked around. While they worked on the car we walked to McDonald’s for lunch. With $50 less in our pockets and working headlights, we headed back to Branson to try to salvage the rest of our day.
-When we got back to Branson, we headed to Branson Landing to do some shopping (now that pay day had come). We bought Phase 10 and Munchkin (card games) at the game store. We went to check out an outlet mall and got some great deals on more camping gear at the Coleman Outlet. We wanted to be prepared for our second night of camping!
-As part of the anniversary package that Tom got through the B&B, we got gift certificates to Andy Williams’ Moon River Grille. We dressed up and headed there for dinner. There was great food at a reasonable price. We had to order 2 desserts (to go) in order to use up our gift certificates! To our surprise, Andy Williams himself actually showed up and ate dinner there only a couple of tables away from us! The lady at the table next to us was a huge fan and got very nervous and flustered. She wanted a picture with him, but was too nervous, so she made her daughter be in the picture and made the waiter take the picture because she was shaking too much. It was so cute! (For those too young to remember Andy Williams [like us], he sang Moon River and the Hawaiian Christmas Song and had a variety show in the 70’s).
-Went to the Kirby and Bambi Magic Show. It was fun even though there were a lot of kids there. Live magic is fun even if you kind of know how it works. They even made a helicopter disappear!

Saturday July 18th

-Breakfast at B&B
-Spent most of the day at Silver Dollar City (since it was $50 each for admission we decided to make the most of it). One of the first things we did was the cave tour, which was very cool. The cave was the original tourist attraction upon which the amusement park was built. We also went on some great roller coasters and ate some succotash.
-We had a break from Silver Dollar City when we went to Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede at 3:00. That was a fun dinner show. It was basically a rodeo competition of North vs. South. We sat on and cheered for the North side. We had a whole chicken and no utensils. Thank God for wet naps!
-After our afternoon at Silver Dollar City, we returned to our B&B to enjoy an evening there. We ate some leftovers from our dinners and desserts. We played the new card games that we had bought and watched some movies. We went out to watch the sunset over the water behind the B&B. A very nice relaxing last night!

Sunday July 19th
-Last breakfast at the B&B – going to miss those homemade breakfasts everyday!
-Drove back to the campsite in Iowa. Stopped at Osceola Cheese and ate lunch at Subway on the way.
-We got back to Nine Eagles much earlier than the last time, with plenty of firewood. We were pretty much the only ones there, so we got our first choice of spots. We had a really great night! We had wonderful burgers and Ricky (the raccoon) only came to visit us while we made s’mores (which we never got around to making the first time). We played some card games in the tent and had a great night’s sleep (with no rain in the morning)!

Monday July 20th
-Made a huge breakfast over the campfire – chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, and pepper bacon. YUM!
-Cleaned up the campsite and drove home. Sad to be heading home, but satisfied that we had a wonderful trip!

Last couple of days!

Last Day in Key West – Drive to Miami – Tuesday 7/22
-Ate breakfast with the roosters at Blue Heaven.
-Toured the Hemingway House – loved all the cats!
-Drove to Miami and had fun on the Florida Turnpike.
-Checked into the Sofitel hotel – pretty French hotel!
-Ate dinner at Jake’s Bar and Grill
-Made an attempt to visit the hotel pool in our Bush’s Baked Bean T-shirts (classy - thought they would be great for the fancy French hotel :P) but it was WAY too cold!

Full Day in Miami – Wednesday 7/23

-Visited Miami Seaquarium: Saw a sea lion show, the flipper dolphin show, and a Killer Whale/dolphin show.
-Swam with the dolphins! The Miami Seaquarium is where the original flipper dolphins lived, so some of the dolphins there were related to flipper! Tom got a nice leisurely swim with his dolphin, while Erin went at warp speed with water splashed in her face! It was awesome and the experience of a lifetime!
-We ate dinner at the restaurant at the Sofitel. It was a very fancy French restaurant, so we got dressed up and enjoyed the last night of our honeymoon.

Last Day! – Thursday 7/24
-Packed up and headed to the airport. Ate at Chili’s at the airport. Sad to be headed home!

A couple more days in Key West

Key West Day 4 – Sunday 7/20
-Went parasailing!
-Spent more time in the pool.
-Ate Cuban sandwiches for lunch. (Erin had really wanted a drink served in a coconut at some point, but we never found one! We actually drank some coconut water right out of a coconut at this meal…not quite the same).
-Walked to the Truman Annex and visited Truman’s Little White House.
-Ate at Alonzo’s oyster bar by the pier for dinner.
-Went to the Blonde Giraffe for some Key Lime pie on a stick (cold and dipped in chocolate – this was Erin’s favorite Key Lime pie, no, not just because it was covered in chocolate! It was very creamy and delicious). We also drank some mochas. :)
-Went on ghost tour of Key West, which started and ended at the La Concha hotel. Locals would make fun of the tour as it walked around by shouting “woo” or “boo” or screaming. We were instructed to respond with “You’re cursed!”…it seemed funny at the time, but looking back it was kind of lame.
-We looked through the pictures from the Ghost tour when we got back to our hotel. One of the pictures freaked Erin out. It turned out it was just because the camera was set on a long exposure time and one of the people on the tour was moving, so they looked sort of ghostly. Erin didn’t get much sleep that night – what a wimp.

Key West Day 5 – Monday 7/21
-We took a ferry to the Dry Tortugas (islands), which had the remains of Fort Jefferson. The boat ride was two hours. We were served lunch once we got to the island. We were given a guided tour of the fort, then we were given time to explore on our own. Tom decided to take the self guided tour while Erin spent some time on the beach, getting burnt. We both made an attempt at snorkeling and gave up pretty quickly. Instead we walked around the fort on the moat wall and got a great view of the coral reef and the beautiful fish. On the boat ride back there were five foot waves, so Erin, of course, got seasick despite the Dramamine she took an hour before the ride (as instructed).
-When we were back on sturdy land, we bought some candy and cookies at the Key (West) Lime Shoppe.
-Back at the hotel we ordered food from Damn Good Food. We got some Damn Good Burgers and ordered a movie and relaxed.

A couple of days in Key West

First full day in Key West – Friday – 7/18
-Ate breakfast at hotel restaurant (not free.  Apparently the more expensive the hotel, the more expensive the breakfast – boo)
-Visited the Southernmost point of the continental U.S.
-Walked down Duval Street – did some window shopping – stopped at Walgreen’s for photo pickup and some souvenir shopping (WG is a great place for souvenirs no matter where you go!)
-Ate lunch at Sloppy Joe’s
-Tom got a custom screen printed T-shirt like the main character in his webcomic, Ethan.
-Erin invested in a pair of key lime green Birkenstocks, which are now her favorite shoes! (while Erin was shopping Tom made some phone calls and got us a reservation to swim with the dolphins at the Miami Seaquarium on the 23rd – told you it would work out!)
-Visited Pirate Soul – the Pirate museum.
-Wine tasting at Key West Winery – Key lime wine was yummy!
-While we were on Duval Street there was a random parade, and Erin caught a lot of beads (but did nothing to earn them – I swear!)
-Got some well deserved ice cream after a hot day walking around.
-Spent some time at the pool and hanging out in hammocks on the beach.
-Ate a late dinner an Italian restaurant called Abondanza (which if you don’t know, means abundance in Italian, which you would know by looking at the GIGANTIC portions they served)

Key West Day 3 – Saturday 7/19
-Slept in and caught some rays on the beach.
-Had drinks and lunch at the bar by the pool.
-Got massages on the beach.
-Spent some time in the pool.
-Saw two weddings at the hotel – one on the beach and one inside.
-Went on a sunset cruise.
-Ate leftover Italian for dinner (seriously huge portions!)

Heading to Key West

Thursday 7/17 – Drive from Key Largo to Key West
One of my main goals on our honeymoon was to swim with dolphins, so on the way to Key West we stopped at a place called the Theater of the Sea. Turned out they didn’t have any openings until the 23rd, at which point we were going to be back in Miami, one day away from heading home. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed at this point, but don’t worry, it all worked out in the end. ;)
Once we got to Key West, we were a little early for check in, so we took a walk to a few places near the hotel. We found a great restaurant called Louie’s Backyard and ate some lunch there. It was beautiful and right on the water. We saw lots of water sports and decided we wanted to try parasailing.
Once we got back to the Casa Marina (our hotel) our room was ready, so we went to check it out. It was a two room suite (a little cramped, but okay) with a small deck. From the deck we had a view of tree branches, which contained a dirty towel and a flip flop hanging from them. Just beyond the trees were a bit of parking lot and some lovely tennis courts. I was also disappointed to find that there was no bath tub. This was the one place that we had decided to splurge and spend just a bit more on the hotel, so we weren’t too happy (I usually hate being difficult and even retelling this story makes me a little uncomfortable, but I guess it all worked out in the end). We asked to see a room with a bath tub. It looked pretty much like any standard hotel room at a Holiday Inn, with a small tub, but at about 3 times the price, so we asked what else was available.
They say the third time’s a charm, and they were definitely right. The third room they showed us was in the main building (the first two were in newer side buildings). The main building was built in the 1920’s so it had beautiful architecture, and tiny rooms. The room they showed us was right above the lobby. It was kind of small and didn’t have a bathtub, but it was so pretty and cozy that it didn’t really matter. The best part was the VIEW. We had a HUGE deck (probably almost the size of the room) with a view overlooking the two huge pools, lots of palm trees, and the ocean. (Oh and the alarm clock had an iPod dock, how cool is that?) It was PERFECT!
The employee that helped us was Wayne. He was a great guy and very understanding. He kept telling us he just wanted our honeymoon to be perfect. We loved the third room, but because of the location it is more expensive than the other rooms we had looked at. Wayne was so nice that he let us have it for the same price as the other rooms! (We had an option later on to move to a two room suite with an ocean view when it opened up, but we chose to stay in this room – I think it might have gone back to regular price for that last couple nights).
We went to get our luggage to bring to the room and by the time we got back Wayne had sent up a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for us! We enjoyed them out on the huge deck. We took a picture of us enjoying the gifts and gave the picture to Wayne along with his tip. What a great guy!
Later that night we enjoyed dinner at Sun Sun, the outdoor restaurant at our hotel. Overall a complicated, but enjoyable day.

Finally Finishing this!

Wednesday 7/16 – Key Largo Day 3

**Okay, so as you can tell I kind of gave up on this blog, like, two days after we got back, but I am going to finish it now. I don’t expect that anyone is checking it anymore or would be interested in reading this, but I just want to finish it for our own records. Part of this entry I wrote last year and never posted, but the rest of this will probably read more like a list of events rather than a descriptive blog. So, sorry if it’s a bit boring after the first paragraph!**

On Wednesday morning we got up, ate some continental breakfast at the hotel, slathered on some sunscreen, and headed for John Pennekamp State Park. We went into the ticket office and bought our tickets for the glass bottom boat. Since we had some time to kill, we decided to lie out on the beach and catch some rays. We boarded the glass bottom boat and had a great time checking out the mangroves, the birds, the reef, and of course, the pretty fish. Erin took some Dramamine, which made her a bit sleepy when we were checking out the fish, but Tom paid close attention and is proud to know what a Sergeant Major fish looks like.

-Lunch at Wendy’s

-Sunset Casino cruise – had to take a small boat from the marina out to a larger cruise ship which had a casino inside. We lost some money and spent time on the top deck enjoying drinks and the sunset. Our best view of the sunset was during the ride back to the marina on the smaller boat.

-We ordered Hawaiian pizza to our hotel room for a late dinner – yum!

-We tried to check out the hot tub, but it was kind of gross and had large dead bugs floating in it, so not much more than our toes made it in.

Tuesday 7/15 - Key Largo Day 2

Okay, we are back! So, last Tuesday was the last time that we actually posted. As soon as we were done playing on the computer and were ready to go out and enjoy the sun - it started raining! We went and grabbed some lunch at DJ's diner (really cool looking place - check out the pictures on our flickr site). The food was great and the place was fun. This was also the first place that we had a taste of Key Lime Pie - but it was in the form of a shake! It was pretty good and we are pretty sure they just put a whole piece of pie in a blender, there were even chunks of graham cracker crust in the shake.

After that the rain had really picked up so we drove over to Walgreen's for a few essentials (snacks for the room, etc.) That's right, we are in the Florida Keys and we went to Walgreen's - that's what happens when you marry Tom. :) When we got there we were surprised to find that they had a liquor store attached! We were pretty happy about this and took the opportunity to stock up a bit.

We went back to the room and rested for a bit - you know, because we had had such a busy day so far. Then, we headed over to happy hour at Coconuts bar (just across the docks/channel from our hotel) and enjoyed their Taco Tuesday special - a free taco with each drink purchased! We went up to the bar and bought our first drinks and got two tickets that we took up to the taco counter for our first round. We found a table, enjoyed our tacos and drinks, and went up for a second round. Tom bought the drinks, got the the taco tickets, and headed for the taco counter, only to find out that happy hour was ending and we were too late because they had already cleaned up the taco stuff. Why would they give out the tickets if there were no more tacos? Also, how did the people at the table next to us magically get tacos delivered to their table after we had been told no? Stupid Taco Tuesday...

We headed back to the room and watched some TV and eventually decided to check out the hot tub. The hot tub ended up being kind of gross...a lot of dead bugs and leaves and hair....gross. We stuck our toes in for a bit and then headed in for bed.

All in all a very laid back, relaxing first day of the honeymoon. Exactly what we needed after a busy, whirlwind weekend.
